Paymentology sets out vision for Thailand’s next era of digital payments
As Thailand’s PromptPay network reaches 2.53 billion transactions a month, Paymentology’s Bangkok Issuer Academy brought together financial services leaders to explore how local knowledge, partnerships and technology can translate payment scale into better customer experiences.
Bangkok, 6 October 2026 – Paymentology, the leading global issuer processor, has set out its vision for the next era of digital payments in Thailand, highlighting the opportunity for banks, fintechs and enterprises to combine local market understanding with modern, scalable technology.
Thailand’s digital payments ecosystem has reached a scale that puts the focus on what comes next: how banks, fintechs and businesses can connect payment experiences to deliver greater customer value. That was a central theme at The Issuer Academy Thailand Masterclass, hosted by global issuer processor Paymentology in Bangkok.
The scale is already significant. PromptPay processed more than 2.53 billion transactions, worth THB 4.60 trillion, in June 2026, according to the Bank of Thailand. The figures underline how deeply digital payments are embedded in everyday life and the opportunity to build on that foundation with experiences that are simple, secure and relevant to local customers.
The Masterclass brought together leaders from Thailand’s banking, fintech, payments and technology sectors to discuss the forces shaping the market. Michael Sek Pheng Yeo, Associate Research Director at IDC Financial Insights and Retail Insights, Asia Pacific, delivered the keynote on the convergence of next-generation payment methods in Thailand.
Michael Sek Pheng Yeo, Associate Research Director, IDC Financial Insights and Retail Insights, Asia Pacific, commented: “Thailand is a really good example of all the major forces in payments working at once. We see wallets, real-time payments, BNPL, cards, tokenisation and agentic commerce all acting in the market simultaneously. It makes Thailand a great market to see how digital payments are going to evolve and coexist.”
Sessions also explored how to win the next generation of Thai consumers and develop business models for the digital economy. Speakers shared perspectives from across the industry, including Paymentology, TrueMoney, T2P, Omise and Asia United Bank.
A key discussion was how established payment rails and newer technologies can work together to solve real customer problems. Rather than assuming one payment method will dominate, participants explored how partnerships and locally adapted services can make the overall experience more useful and accessible. The opportunity for issuers is to bring card-based services into these familiar experiences, combining convenience with relevant features and customer value.
Anna Porra, Chief Revenue Officer at Paymentology, said: “The future of payments will not be built by adding technology for technology’s sake. It will be built by solving real customer problems simply and at scale. Thailand’s advanced digital payments ecosystem, where payments are already embedded into everyday life, creates a strong platform for the next wave of customer innovation.
“Successful innovation must start with the problem, not the technology. It should be measured by the value it creates for customers, its simplicity and its commercial sustainability. It must also reflect local realities. That innovation may mean bringing card experiences into familiar QR and online payment journeys, rather than asking customers to adopt a separate product. The next era will belong to organisations that can turn complexity into intuitive experiences people want to use.”
Minh Ha Truong, Head of Growth, APAC at Paymentology, added: “There are shared trends across Southeast Asia, but no single model can simply be applied across the region. Each market has its own regulation, infrastructure and customer behaviour. The organisations that succeed will understand those differences and have the technology and partnerships to adapt, localise and keep evolving.”
The Masterclass comes as Paymentology continues to develop its presence across Thailand and Southeast Asia. The company works with organisations across the region, including T2P, TrueMoney, PayMongo, Asia United Bank and Agoda, combining issuer-processing capabilities with local market knowledge.
The Thailand Masterclass is part of The Issuer Academy, Paymentology’s knowledge-sharing platform for financial institutions, fintechs, technology providers and payments experts. Through masterclasses, podcasts and industry resources, the programme gives participants opportunities to share practical experience and explore the future of issuing and payments.
