AkiraChix: Empowering Young Women to Redefine the Tech Industry in Kenya

Equipping the next generation of women with the tools to thrive in technology

In Kenya, women are breaking barriers and reshaping the tech industry thanks to the work of AkiraChix, a nonprofit organisation founded in 2010. Created by a group of passionate women, AkiraChix inspires, supports, and connects young women in the technology field, challenging the status quo and empowering them to take on careers in tech-related fields.

Paymentology partnered with AkiraChix in 2021 to further its mission of equipping young women with critical tech skills. Through its innovative programmes, AkiraChix has created spaces where young girls can gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

One of their most impactful initiatives is CodeHive, a signature programme that challenges students to develop market-ready tech prototypes addressing Kenya’s most pressing issues. Winning teams receive mentorship from global technology leaders, three-month work placements, and opportunities to connect at leading tech conferences and workshops.

Together, Paymentology and AkiraChix are creating brighter futures for young women in Kenya by providing access to skills, networks, and opportunities that unlock potential and drive meaningful change in the tech industry.
